The Breeding Research Scientist is primarily accountable for undertaking key activities to develop technology platforms, generate and validate candidate traits, and deliver outputs seamlessly into all AGT breeding programmes. The role will also lead and manage AGT’s involvement and contribution to pre-breeding research projects across all crops. This role is a research leadership role that works closely with the breeding teams as well as establishing strong and effective relationships/collaborations with 3rd party researchers and technology companies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop comprehensive and critically thought-out research project plans for all activities.
  • Work collaboratively across AGT teams to plan for and utilise resources in the lab/GH/field that are required for each project.
  • Engage with 3rd party researchers and AGT breeding/science teams to determine AGT’s involvement in pre-breeding projects as they arise.
  • Seek out 3rd party researchers and/or collaborators and setup projects as required to deliver on AGT strategy.
  • Determine and manage budgets for projects, and anticipate requirements in advance.
  • Identify external technologies of interest to AGT, assess their potential, and develop proposals for review.
  • Day to day management of research projects and activities spanning greenhouse, field and lab to ensure all projects stay on their planned timelines – and problem solve as required.
  • Utilise critical thinking and scientific rigor to make decisions and develop frameworks for decision making ahead of each project commencing.
  • Work with breeders to identify and close technical gaps through collaborative and in-house research.
  • Regular interstate travel

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Science or a related discipline
  • Previous experience in plant breeding, or a related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of plant molecular biology, plant genetics, and breeding.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with sound decision making capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and across multiple teams.
  • Ability to work across multiple projects and prioritise as necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills, adept at developing strong interpersonal relationships, self-motivator, and an excellent time manager.
  • Current drivers’ licence
